REST’s stateless architecture aligns naturally with microservices-based AI deployments, where each request contains all the information needed to complete a transaction, allowing systems to scale horizontally. With 83 percent market adoption, REST remains the dominant protocol for enterprise integrations, meaning that development teams, third-party vendors and AI platform providers all speak the same language. This broad ecosystem support dramatically reduces the friction of connecting new AI capabilities to existing enterprise infrastructure. By wrapping legacy services with RESTful APIs, organisations can expose core data and functionality to AI consumers without modifying the underlying systems. This decoupling is fundamental. API’s separate the system of record from the system of intelligence, allowing legacy platforms to continue doing what they do best – maintaining transactional integrity and operational continuity – while AI models operate as a reasoning layer that consumes and returns signals without owning state. This approach is transformative for AI migration because it allows organizations to modernize one functional area at a time without touching everything else. A customer analytics module can be extracted, wrapped in APIs and connected to an AI recommendation engine while the rest of the legacy ERP continues to operate undisturbed. As each new service proves itself in production, traffic is gradually shifted away from the legacy component until it can be safely retired.
